Design and creativity are inter-related. Creativity is mysterious, throughout the ages, scholars have had different understandings and definitions on creativity. The psychologist Robert J. Sternberg thinks creativity is the capabilities to produce artworks, which should be original and appropriate. The architect John Kurdich sees originality as a struggle, a way to seek liberation or our soul. Many people see originality as a result coming out all of a sudden, that’s not always true.

In academic there’s a “Magic Island Theory”, which was originated from the folklore of sailors: in the vast oceans with roaring waves, the islands are always elusive. When the sailors want to avoid the island, it shows up, on the contrary, when they are eager to see the island, it doesn’t show up. So it’s being called ”Magic Island”. In fact, ”Magic Island” is coral island, it’s out of year after year’s growth. “Magic Island Theory” tells us the producing of creativity is not mirage out of nowhere, but like coral island, with the daily accumulation of experiences and knowledge. With this foundation, then you can have the flashing magic creatives.
